Watched two separate videos of statements from talk/comedy type shows made very soon after the 9/11 attacks. It’s strange looking back at something that happened 11 years ago, something that will remain embedded in the American consciousness. The first one was Jon Stewart from The Daily Show, and the second one was David Letterman. One thing I noticed was the apologies for the redundancies of their statements (Stewart) and the constant helpless reiteration of “well, this is just… terribly sad.”

It is. It is terribly sad. Words which seem to somehow not go far enough in expressing the tragedy.

But to me, this kind of thing reveals the inadequacy of language to cope with trauma and chaos, yet how it can remain incredibly authentic and communicative.
